Reading Response #1 : Divergent

I haven't always been a fan of reading, but when I find something I like I just can't seem to put it down. Divergent was definitely one of those books. if I had a favorite type of book it would have to be fiction, mostly because it takes my mind away from any distractions. I try not to judge a book by its cover, but even that's hard for me, so it was good that divergent had a pretty cool looking cover. The cover really makes me think and wonder.
Divergent is a really fast read for having 487 pages, you could easily read a quarter of it in a day. I haven't read much I'm only on page 138, but what I've grasped from it is, the main characters name is Beatrice, she is raised abnegation, which is a very peaceful, selfless faction. there are 5 factions, Dauntless: which is the thrill seeking faction, and the military as well. Erudite: The intelligent yet a little snobby faction. Amity: The laid back faction, very peaceful, they are the farmers. Candor: The very blunt and honest faction. the fifth would be abnegation. Every teenager is forced to pick one of these factions. Beatrice's test result came back inconclusive, so she was given the option between Dauntless, Abnegation, and Erudite. She picked Dauntless at her ceremony. During her first initiation they are forced to jump down a pit, not knowing what's at the bottom. Beatrice surprisingly jumped first. She landed on a net, she was able to pick a new name, since she was in a new faction. "What's your name Stiff, think carefully it's what you'll be known as." "Tris, my name is Tris." that is now how Beatrice became Tris. I really like how they basically get to start a new, and a clean slate. I look forward to reading in to the book more for my next reading response.
If I had to pick a fraction I would probably be stuck between Erudite or Candor. I say Erudite because I like to act like I know everything, and I consider myself intelligent. I say Candor because I speak my mind, and find it ridiculous to lie to people.
The picture below shows Tris jumping to possibly her death for Dauntless.
Rob Acosta read a book? What?????
ReplyDeleteAlthough I'm not a fan of the culture surrounding this book, I have to say that the idea behind it is a fairly interesting take on a dystopian society. Just out of curiosity, what would you do if you had the new start/clean slate that the present in the story?
